The federal government has charged the Altoona Housing Authority in Pennsylvania with racial discrimination for applying tighter eviction standards for a black resident than for whites. The PHA denies the charges filed by HUD on behalf of a former resident and plans to defend itself.
Six public housing residents recently were told by the Maine State Housing Authority that they would have to stop growing/using medical marijuana in their homes or will lose housing assistance. The board of commissioners voted 4-3 last month not to allow the use, possession, or cultivation of medical marijuana in apartments subsidized through its Section 8 program. It agreed, however, to hear additional comments at an Oct. 15th meeting.
A $55 million federal grant for tornado recovery efforts awarded to Alabama in January has been recently approved by HUD. The disaster recovery plans detail how the state and specific communities will use the funding to rebuild from the damage sustained in the April 27, 2011, tornadoes.

The White House released the report mandated by the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012 on Friday, Sept. 14. The report describes the administration’s plan for implementing the budget cuts that could be triggered if Congress doesn’t act to reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion.
HUD recently released its proposed fair market rents (FMRs) for fiscal year 2013. HUD uses the FMRs to determine payment standard amounts for several programs, include the Housing Choice Voucher and HOME programs.
The proposed FY 2013 FMRs in HUD’s notice reflect several updates to the methodology used to calculate FMRs. First, HUD has updated the bedroom ratios used to calculate 0, one-, three- and four-bedroom FMRs based on the two-bedroom FMR. The new bedroom ratios are constructed using 2006–2010 five-year American Community Survey (ACS) data.
The Houston Housing Authority received 20,000 online applications in three hours on Aug. 20 for spots on a waiting list for housing subsidy vouchers. The agency opened the waiting list for the Section 8 voucher program for the first time in six years.
