HUD is in the process of overhauling its existing 20-year-old housing inspection protocols. The new system-wide housing inspection program is called NSPIRE, which stands for the “National Standards for the Physical Inspection of Real Estate.” HUD recently published its proposal for the new physical inspection scoring and ranking methodology. This represents an important piece in its transition to the new housing inspection program.

HUD recently requested public comment on plans to implement the key changes made by the VAWA Reauthorization Act of 2022 (VAWA 2022) to the Violence Against Women Act of 1994. VAWA 2022 was passed in March 2022, and it became effective on Oct. 1, 2022. The Violence Against Women Act provides housing protections for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking. Despite the name of the law, VAWA’s protections apply regardless of sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
To calculate and verify household income, applicants and tenants who are at least 18 years of age and each family head, spouse, or co-head regardless of age must provide the site with certain information specified by HUD. To make sure that the assistance is used properly, owners must verify the information that’s used to determine eligibility and the amount of rent a household pays.

For federally assisted housing sites, having an on-site service coordinator means vulnerable residents can have easier access to supportive services and other community resources and, ultimately, be able to get help they may need. Service coordinators act as advocates for residents and are members of the management team. And in many cases, services obtained for residents help them stay housed and healthy.
