The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has initiated a comprehensive program to upgrade over 600,000 Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) devices across the city. This effort aims to improve water meter accuracy and enhance customer service. Starting Dec. 2, 2024, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the program will extend to all five boroughs over the next three years.
One level deeper: The AMR devices are small gray boxes attached to properties that wirelessly transmit water consumption data to DEP. These devices provide real-time monitoring, helping owners track usage, identify leaks, and prevent unexpected charges. The upgraded devices will build on these features with enhanced reliability and advanced capabilities.
Since most AMR devices are installed outside properties, upgrades typically won’t require appointments. DEP technicians and contractors, identifiable by official logos and proper identification, will perform the upgrades in about 15 to 30 minutes. They won’t ask for payment at any time.
Owners are advised to clear any obstructions around the devices, such as overgrown bushes. If interior access is necessary, DEP will contact owners to schedule an appointment. Failure to provide access when needed may incur a fee.
The bottom line: This citywide initiative is set to modernize water management for New Yorkers. The upgraded AMR devices will provide more accurate billing, improved leak detection, and a smoother overall customer experience. Importantly, the upgrades are entirely free of charge, with notifications provided before work begins in specific areas.
