Through the course of the pandemic, HUD’s Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH) issued waivers and alternative requirements for multiple housing programs. This was allowed through the CARES Act, which was signed into law on March 27, 2020. In addition to authorizing over $2 trillion in emergency assistance and health care response for individuals, families, and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it included housing provisions.
